Projects
Running projects on behalf of the region forms a major part of the work of the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC). The projects are designed to be of direct benefit to the goals of the constituent institutions and are funded by a combination of external sources and regional funding.
Active projects
The Cape Library Consortium (CALICO) provides a networked library automation service for each constituent institution and the benefit of common access to the Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) of each. This constitutes a single Western Cape collection that is housed in different locations with many resources accessible to registered students and staff members who have need of them.
HERS-SA is a managed network to improve the status of women in higher education in South Africa.
The Publishing Liaison Office (PLO) operates as a copyright clearance centre on behalf of the four universities in the Western Cape, providing services relating to copyright clearance and related matters for teaching/learning materials used by staff and students. Activities of the PLO include: creating an awareness of the copyright laws of South Africa, facilitating the compliance to these laws, negotiating reasonable fees for the use of materials from the various rights holders and participating in institutional forums shaping copyright policies and guidelines.
The objective of the Scientific and Industrial Leadership Initiative (SAILI) is to increase the numbers of previously disadvantaged people in leadership positions in science-based industry, in such a way as to benefit the economy and thereby the well-being of South Africa as a whole. SAILI is an educational non-governmental organization based in Cape Town, South Africa. Officially started in January 1996, it is currently working with historically disadvantaged schools in the Peninsula where the focus is on providing educators and learners with skills effectively to teach and learn mathematics and science. Its intervention starts at primary level and extends through to high school and tertiary. In addition, it awards MBA fellowships to selected students each year.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a common teaching platform for the Western Cape region for undergraduate Nursing education leading to registration was adopted at the end of August 2004. The MOU is now administered by the Nursing Academic Board, reporting via the Board of the Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC) to the Senates of the constituent institutions of CHEC.
Completed projects
INFOLIT was an information literacy project aimed at promoting interest in, and awareness of, the importance of information literacy within the constituent institutions of CHEC. It was established by the Adamastor Trust and CALICO in 1995 and successfully concluded its work in December 2002.
The archives of the Project have been preserved at the Cape Higher Education Consortium headquarters.
